Leopard Gecko Not Opening Eyes

karosenberg Nov 14, 2003 10:50 AM

I have a healthy male HTCT leopard gecko. He is in a 24" x 24" x 8" cage with two females. There is a shed box and three hiding spots. The last week he has stopped opening his eyes unless I provoke him to do so by sticking a cricket near his mouth. When he does open them they seem alright, perhaps a little sunken. His weight is alright and his behavior is fine, I am confused. What could cause this to happen?

I am not an expert on gecko's but maybe your light could be too bright?

Well, the symptom of sunken-eyes usually indicates dehydration. You may want to make sure the gecko is drinking; generally they will lick dew off of surfaces or you can put a few drops of water on the snout. If there is no activity level in comparison to your other geckos, then it can be possibly: bacterial, protozoal, fungal or parasitical. A visit to a vet may be in order. Also, consider separation due to probability of infection. Goodluck. Pauline may have some good info on this on her website.
