CRICKET KEEPING PROBLEMS!!!!

cv768 Nov 14, 2003 11:57 AM

I have 11 geckos, 3 basilisks, 3 bearded dragons and 2 chameleons...We need to keep a lot of crickets on hand!

I order 1000 a month but they always seem to die and the dead ones go rotten and moldy very fast which require lots of cleaning and deaths of the other crickets...I lose probably 500 out of the thousand then I have to go buy them at outrageous prices til my next shipment of 1000 comes in....

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO KEEP CRICKETS ALIVE AND HEALTHY????

Right now they are in a giant rubbermaid tub which is next to a baseboard heater that keeps them warm...they get fed carrots that sit on a plate on the inside.

first, I would like to state that crickets are vile, smelly, and loud. I would also state that roaches are awesome feeders, since they breed so well, and are highly nutritious(of course this is dependant of what you feed them). I personally will never deal with crickets again, and am in the process of aquiring a small breed of roach. I already have hissers and love them to death.

But hey, lets address your cricket issues, rather than impose my thoughts. crickets love to get the plague and die in mass numbers. once one dies, the smell kills others, and then it grows exponentially from there. Therefore you have to keep them alive. This means it can not be too hot or too cold. They are very temperature sensative. I have kept them (in quanities in excess of 10000) at 78 degrees with no problems. I kept them very dry, but supplied them with enough fruit so that they can get moisture. You need to supply adaquate ventalation, or one dead cricket turns to 500 in 3 days. I used to breed them, and to do that, you supply a container of potting soil that is moist, not soked, not mud, and not dust. They are pretty good breeders i guess(man I hate them). I never had a problem with dieoffs, after I opened up their enclosure for ventalation, made sure the enclosure was dry, and temperature never fluctuated fast, and stayed around 75 - 78 degrees. Crickets are nocturnal, so if you need to heat them, use a heat emitter or a heat pad.

What age do you but them at? Might have something to do with die off. I've never had a problem with dead crix smell and then having large number die.
I order 2000 3 week olds and raise them. Since they have a short life span (6 weeks) by the time i use them all they are adult size.
I lose about 20 out of the 2000 and that's acceptable losses.
I do nothing special. I house them in a 66 quart rubbermaid.
I use the flats that come with them, and paper towel/toilet paper rolls. I use newspaper for the bttom as it's easier to just lift it out.
I use those bottoms for flower pots for water. I just fold paper towels and water down. For food i use chick feed (only cost about 4 dollars for 40lbs and lasts over 4 months) for the staple with occasional fruits and veggies (rots to fast and smells).
I don't use anything for heat.
