Savanna food variations

cavyscandy Nov 14, 2003 12:15 PM

I want to be sure I am doing right by our Savanna. I have read so much on this form about the variations of foods for monitors. I know what I have been doing is greatly improving the condition he was in, but no I want to be sure I am feeding him everything I should be.
When we got him he was almost dead. dehydrated, very under weight, many broken toes, week, he would not even walk. we have never had a monitor, so i went to the Internet and read. it took many soakings and many tries to get him to finally eat. we had tied the canned dog food, but he never ate any. but we finally got him to eat worms. very few and slowly but and after awhile he was eating eagerly, we then went to mice. we messed up twice getting him large hoppers, cause we seen them again a few days later (very stinky and disgusting). So he gets small to medium sized hoppers now
we have had him almost 3 months, he runs now, he has a real tail now (was almost a tee with zero fat reserve) full and healthy looking. he has lost most of the wrinkle on his body now from finally growing into his skin again. and he is now having his first shed since we got him. so he is greatly improving. but now i worry about the variation all we feed him is mice, he eats about 6 a week. what else should i be feeding him? should i decrease the mice and add other foods, or simply add other foods? Also if you know of any really good and detailed sights on this that would be great.

Savanna Monitor, Gecko(?), Iguana, 3 snakes (Gray Banded King, Amazon Tree Boa, Ribbon) Rabbit, Fereet, 5 mice, 5 fish, 2 parakeets, 6 turtles (4 water ?, 2 box) 3 Dogs, 2 cats. And I am sure the next hurt or abandonded (ect.) animal any one we know finds will soon live here too! Plus me, Hubby, our 3 kids, and 4 sisters that are not ours by blood. One BIG happy family

Sounds like you're doing a great job so far! As far as food offerings go, stick to whole prey items. In addition to the mice, try regular and king mealworms (gutloaded and/or dusted), crickets (gutloaded and/or dusted), feeder roaches (again, gutloaded and/or dusted) and when he gets bigger, day old chicks. Some other things that are safe but should be fed only occasionally might be a little scrambled egg (embryonated is best), and cooked, unspiced chicken/turkey breast. Again, your best bet is to just stick to the whole prey items and he should be fine. Best of luck!

I have been looking threw here and some pictures. And there are quite a few bright colored Savannah's out there. Mine is Gray. Gray with patterns ect, but still just different shades of gray. My question- (s)
Is he gray most likely because he was born that way? Or could his terrible life before us cause it somehow. And if so, would he likely ever have color again? These may sound stupid, and I know not important, but was just wondering.
