Madagascan Giant Day Geckos, Questions!!>>>

TebbyGecko Nov 14, 2003 03:30 PM

Hey,

I REALLY would love to buy one of these beautiful geckos, but first off and foremost.. I need to know the proper care of these animals. If you have a GOOD caresheet that provides precise and of course safe husbandry and care of these guys, I would appreciate it very much! Thanks!

Here are some pics of my gecko's set up that I posted last June. Some things have changed, but mostly it is the same as it was then.

Hey britney, seen you on the leo forum. Decided to get into Phelsumas? =)

These guys are active, so give them a big enclosure, with lots of vertical space. I used to keep my grandis in a 3x3x5 foot enclosure with sansevieria, bromeliads, ferns, and pothos. Be sure to include several driftood pieces or bamboo stalks as they can get 'flap tail' when walking on glass all day.

Provide UV lighting 12-14 hours a day, with a strong basking spot (mine love heat).

Spray the tank daily to aid in shediing, and to keep humidity up. They rarely drink from water bowls.

Main diet is Crickets. I also feed the occasinal wax worms, mealworms, silkworms, lobster roaches and fruit babyfood. Always occasionaly dust the food with a supplement.

Dont handle them too much as they are skittish and have fragile skin. However, i used to let mine roam around my room for hours, and i have never seen any damage to the skin before. I also take it outside often on a sunny day to bask in some natural UV.

Theres a few caresheets on the web on these guys, you just have to do your research. Ingo and others on this forum has more experience than me, and might fill you in on some more info. Until then, www.daygecko.com has basic stuff you might want to read.

Good luck,

M.N

Awesome, thanks!

Yeah, I've always wanted to own just one Madagascan Giant Day Gecko, they're just so gorgeous! I've seen you on the Leo forum too.

One question-- What is the best substrate for these guys? I've heard repti-bark is good.. then I've heard that doing layers of substrates(Pea gravel layered with peat moss, then that layered with bark) is great. What do you suggest is safest and fairly easy to clean? Thanks!

I dont recommend only repti-bark for 3 reasons.

-risk of impaction
-crickets hide in them
-can give splinters

Although a mix would work out fine. I use a mix of repti bark, bed-a-beast (eco-earth) and sphagnum moss, (ontop gravel for drainage) topped with live moss and leaf litter.

Basically though, you can just use plain soil or bedabeast.
