Updated Elaphe porphyracea vaillanti photo

Stephen Emerick Nov 14, 2003 04:19 PM

Well my CB hatchlings are already up to 24 grams, and doing awesome ! Not much of a difference between keeping these guys or Coxi, both as CB eat pinkies from the get-go, and appear to thrive in captivity.

Hoping to get more of these guys going, and be able to offer them to the public in the near future (fingers crossed )

Very nice. I'm scratching my head, but I can't seem to recall another snake that has both rings and full length stripes. That is some combination.

Nice snakes. What's interesting to me is that porphyracea that I kept 7 or so years ago that were sold to me as "vaillanti" don't really look like the animals you have. Do your adults also have the very dark banding? My "vaillanti" had very light transluscent-type banding so that the striping could be seen through it. A photo is below. Perhaps mine were really "nigrofasciata"?

David, they are both likely to be Chinese porphyracea in the "nigrofasciata" group. The subspecies name has only recently been changed to vaillanti, and I understand that most of the nigrofasciata have been moved to vaillanti. Also, as Steve will probably tell you, the babies have more color/contrast than the adults, which may appear more faded. On top of that, there is a lot of variability in the nigrofasciata/vaillanti group. I assume that the porphyracea vary similarly to the mandarina that occupy a similar range from N. Vietnam through s. China. Hope this helps a little.

Dave, yes I think there probably is some variability to these but they will fade as they get older. My CH animals looked like that when they were young and look like yours now. ----Glenn

Thanks Glenn and Terry. That clarifies things.

Here's a photo of the mother of the hatchlings. Sire was also of this coloration as a 30" adult. Through the importing of the adults, I've seen a wide range of colors being collected in the wild. It will be intersting to see if the vibrance of the colors is a random occurence, or if it can be bred into the babies through selective breeding such as with the Lystrophis pulchers.

Thanks, Stephen Emerick

I have been asking around in a lot of places looking for these guys! Glad to see you are working with them. What do you expect to let them go for, when you plan on letting some go. I know I would be interested .. even though I know it will cost me an arm and a leg.... LOL that is if you plan on selling for as much as the others I have talked with.
