Cuban Knight Anoles.

ultanoleman Nov 14, 2003 05:41 PM

Hey sup guys, well i have been here for like a year. I've been away from animals. Anyways, do you think you can tame a Knight anole already grown and wild caught?? People got scars from them so I don't want to take chances. People who have them tell me about their behaviors and the food they like to eat. Post pics if you want too
Thanks guys!!

You know, I've read in a couple of places that they can be tamed, but most people I've known that have kept them tell me that they'll never ever tame.

Personally, I've never handled an adult but I've handled a few juveniles. I once saved an extremely dehydrated and emaciated Knight that was dangling from a single spider web thread, upside down from its tail from a lemon tree I had. Even that sick and nearly dead animal was pretty nasty (and it was very small, just longer than an adult Green anole should be).

If you're looking to tame an anole, unless you're specifically looking for a big challenge, I don't think this is the way to go! Maybe some of the other large anoles are nicer

Well i have a knight that is relatively tame. He doesn't like to be handeld per se, but once i catch him he doesn't try to bite or anything. Granted the only time i handle him is when i'm cleaning the cage.
My suggestion would be to find a breeder from the list here at Kingsnake and see if any of them sell juveniles preferably captive bred.

I'm not saying your anole is sick or has parasites, but if an aggressive species is acting "tame" it's the first sign of something wrong. Most other anoles tame, though, but not to the point of handling. I don't think there is any anole in the market that will not stress out from it, so I'd look into large geckos or something other than anoles, although you never know!

Generally, tame animals (species) don't have many predators in their wild environments, which isn't true for any of the Caribbean anoles.

I have a Cuban- Aand hes a wild caught. Hes pretty aggresive he latched onto my finger and ripped it apart. The only time i handle him is when im cleaning his cage. I would like to know if anybody knows if i could stick a captive breed in with a wild one? Also if you know or if anybody knows, wwhere i could find a captive breed cuban.

Thanks

I've looked for captive bred knights and i don't know if i found them. I got mine from a reptile shop that happened to have one.

I havn't gone through all the breeders on Kingsnake but here are 2 that sell Cuban/Knights so you could email them and find out if they are captive bred or not. Actually one of the places doesn't have a current price/avaliability list so they may not have them.

As for putting a captive bred one in with a wild caught, there might be problems, i would definately NOT put a captive bred male in with a wild caught male that would be disaterous.

Disasterous for any two male anoles to be together, don't forget!

Personally, I've never owned a Knight and have only handled a couple of times... very carefully. Everyone I know that has owned one has been bitten and found them to be very aggressive, but everyone that I know that has owned one has also just caught adults themselves, so that could be a reason why they'd NEVER TAME. Either way, they're not a handleable species in general.

Everyone says a Tokay can't be tamed, but my Storm will let anyone hold and pet her as long as she knows where I am. Even allowing the cat to smell her; the same cat that took her tail. She also enjoys perching on me through my entire work shift. Tokays are not what they've been made out to be. And this is not the only species I've easily handled.

I have been told that Cuban Knights are the 'Tokays' of Anoles and I've been eager to get some. When I receive the Knights I ordered and get to try taming them, I'll post my results.

Well, I'm not saying your gecko is sick but I want to bring up that when a tame specimen of an untame species comes up, it's usually parasites or some other sickness that's causing it.

Still, even with the wildest of beasts, there's always going to be that one that does tame. There are exceptions to every rule, but it's a good general precaution to stay weary of Knight anoles. Also, I usually find them being sold sick, underweight, and very small (less than a foot total length). I'm sure that people take them home and nurse them to health only to find a healthy, robust, grouchy, and two-foot-long beast ready to bite the hand that feeds it, so... It's not something you buy and expect to become tame!
