What are these worms?

EricC May 31, 2003 11:34 AM

I found these little red worms in my turtles pond and was wondering what they were. I was keeping my turtle indoors and had never seen them before. They started showing up in the water in the outdoor pond before I even put my turtle outside. From what I've read I think they may be bloodworms (fly river larvae). Anyone know? Do I need to do something about them?

They are red mosquito larvae (non-biting mosquitos)...excellent turtle food!

To keep the skeeters from breeding, keep the water moving with a fountain or waterfall. Also put some small fish in like minnows, They will eat them.

Whew! Thanks, I was a little worried they may be something harmful. I'll put some minnows or small bluegill in the pond and see if they take care of them. I already have a filter installed with the output shooting into the water to try and agitate the surface. Will give my snapper something to chase.

The are called blood worms. Harmless larva and very good turtle food. You have gold there my friend. A natural source of food for the turtles and minnows, goldfish or anything else in the pond. Don't worry about them they are harmless.
