Snake Hunts

plstink Nov 14, 2003 09:59 PM

Hello, I'm looking for anyone who has information about snakehunts. I have been going to the sinnemahoning snake hunt most of my life,so I have decided to do a presentation on what a snake hunt is for a class.
I need to know why they put them on. is it to educate or to keep track of the population?
If they use the information to track the population who uses it.
When I was young, I remember that they use to milk the snake; why did they stop? and did they use the venom to make anti-venom?
And any other information anyone might have that could help me.

Sadly, I think that most such hunts are a combination of "sport"...(and I use the term loosely), and the hate/fear that so many people STILL have of snakes. I may be missing something, so anyone who knows otherwise please feel free to add.
I would contact the folks who put on the hunt that you have attended. Get as much information as you can from them, and ask them where else to look. If my thoughts are correct, you may want to give an educational presentation against such hunts, learning more about how most snakes are actually useful predators of rodents that damage crops, etc. Good luck. AFAIK, the major purpose of snake roundups is to milk money out of the pockets of the attendees. I have heard, but cannot vouch for, claims that milked venom from these roundups had too much bacterial contamination to be worth using for antivenin production.
