1000 mealworms or 250 worms from fluker?

Raydeohed Nov 14, 2003 10:28 PM

So i went to fluker's website (flukerfarms.com) and they have a deal where you can get 7 shipments of 250 mealworms every week, month, or bi-weekly which i was thinking of doing. but then i saw they see mealies by the 1,000 for about 6 bucks. The question I have is that, since I only have one leo, and feed her about 5-7 mealies a night, It would take me a long time to use all 1000. i know you refrigerate them to keep them in "hibernation mode", but it says on the site, if you wanna use them after 2 weeks, take them out and give them food, like a potato so they dont die. has anyone had any problems keeping them alive by buying in large quantities but only using enough for one leo?? just wondering if they'll be able to survive being used in such small amounts. Thanks.

With just one leopard gecko I would just start a small mealworm colony with some of the ones you ordered. If you decide on the 1000 count just refrigerate a good portion and take out what you need on a weekly basis. Like I said though with one leopard you can become self-sufficient in no time!

I've read all bout a mealworm colony and stuff, I just don't wanna have to deal with all those mealies...I'm a graduate student and am usually not home during the daylight hours when my leo is asleep. The idea of having a colony of mealies/beetles/larvae doesn't seem appetizing to me. Maybe it's just me though.

Have you looked at: http://www.bcrcricket.com/mealworms.html

You can get a cup of 500 for 2.55, or a cup of 100 for .90 .(Shipping isn't included)

I have a friend who has 2 geckos he got from me and he gets the 500 count and keeps the cup in the fridge. He always has 50 mealies out at a time feeding on a rolled oat and dog food mix with fresh fruits / veggies to increase their nutritional value prior to feeding. His geckos have been eating 8 - 10 mealworms a night each, and that size has worked out well.
