New snake?

redawaya1 Nov 14, 2003 10:43 PM

I found an eastern that was getting 'played with' by a cat. I ended up letting it go. Primarily b/c I hate seeing an animal that has experienced freedom confined to a small box. I have been intrigued by hognose ever since (My God, aren't they beautiful?). I would like to eventually purchase one, but I plan on traveling extensively in the next few years. I'm not sure if a hognose, or any type of reptile, would adjust to relocating every 13 weeks. Should I simply wait until I plant myself to delve into the world, or are they versatile enough to deal with that type of environment?

Thx,
RedAwaya

Easterns are really really tough to get feeding on rodents, and can be tricky captives. Captive bred Westerns do a lot better. I'd let this one go if it's healthy and look into buying a Western from a breeder. They're fun!

I found him a while back, and ended up letting him go in the woods, away from the house where I found him. I'm thinking of buying a captive bred. I'm not sure how they handle stress. Any comments appreciated.

Ok, that should stop this sort of thing from happening in the future ^_^; ...

Even Westerns can be ridiculously temperamental. I have personal experience with a Western that did not cope with a short move. Although I think that snakes can adapt to some stress (where I work, some snakes are used several times a week for educational programs where they are bagged up and transported for several hours), I don't think that hognoses are your best choice. Corn snakes to me seem to be rather oblivious to stress that would otherwise make a hognose fling its poop! Consider going with a corn or a cane until you get settled down.
