Soaking monitors

svt-sinister Nov 15, 2003 09:44 AM

I have a couple of questions about soaking yellow ackie monitors

1: Is it ok if i soak them every day or every other day?
2: while there soaking they make this weird spitting sound. What is that?

3: Dooes anybody make anything i could put in the water that will give them calcium? I already use the poweder? Just wondering. Thanks

You can do whatever you want, but I've found soaking, especially in ackies, to be completely unnecessary and tends to really piss them off.

The spitting sounds is most likely a sign of discontent (a very short hiss). Some species are big hissers (gouldii complex), others like jobiensis and ackies, do very short hisses that sound almost like sneezes. I've heard people refer to them as being a sign of respiratory problems, but I have not had any problems with that.

For calcium I would dust crickets and depending on size feed them chopped fuzzies. I have never seen an ackie drink, they seem to avoid water at all costs, but I always have fresh water available for them.

I understand why people advocate soaking, as I believe dehydration is a big monitor killer, but I think it is a better solution to give them conditions so they don't need to be soaked.

Good Luck,
