Shedding Question

pdelena Nov 15, 2003 10:47 AM

We just got our first gecko, Nemo, this past weekend. He was pale two days ago. The girl at the store told me to mist him when he started to shed. After talking to people here, I decided to go with a humid hide instead. He's spent the past day in his hide and today looks good as new. Can anyone tell me how long the shedding process lasts? Did he shed his skin yesterday/last night and now is good??? Also, how often do juvies shed? Monthly, weekly???

Thanks
Joe

Good choice on going with the humid hide. By "shedding process" do you mean how long does it take Nemo to pull the skin off of him/herself? If so, it should take no more then one night. That is, you'll go to bed, and Nemo will still be milky in color, and you'll wake up to a bright vibrant Nemo =) Now I am by no means an expert on this, I too have my first gecko, Jak, for almost 3 months now. As best I can tell, he's shed a couple times now. But he spends soo much time in the humid hide, the shed comes off very easily for him, so I never see any signs of a shed, other then the bright colors. Good luck with Nemo. and just for fun, here's a pic of Jak

Hi Joe,

Nemo shed if he looks less pale When they shed, they have a white coating on top of them... With my leo, the actual process of having her start rubbing against the humid hide and tearing off her skin lasts anywhere between 1-2 hours I was watching last time..hehe~ She starts with her head and works her way down to her tail and eats her skin the moment it comes off. Nemo's skin did shed last night and he's lookin' great! Depending on their age, juvies can shed every 3-6 weeks... sometimes it's a little before, a little after, or in between The older Nemo gets, the longer it will take him to shed Take care!
