Dark Coloration

tomsburms May 31, 2003 12:58 PM

Hi all,
I have a very young gtp that has some really dark coloration. He is about a year old and probably 28" long. He was originally imported and I have had him since he was a baby. Even when he was about 12" he was already dark green. The last couple of inches of his tail are bright yellow and his dorsal pattern has always been bright yellow. He is supposed to be a Leher type, but I have not seen any this dark. Any thoughts on the local?

Thanks,
Tom

I don't know what locale he is, but he is amazing looking! For my money, I would say maybe wamena, but it is hard to say. Post the pic on chondroweb and maybe they can help you. Once again, awesome snake.

Tom,

it is typical of many of the highland locality type chondros to go through a very dark stage during ontogensis. As far as what locality he is actually from, unless you have some sort of paperwork describing where your snake and/or it's parents were collected from, there is not much anyone can tell you as far as his true locality. However, I would say that your snake is an awesome looking example of a highland locality type. The only reason I am calling it such is that it has many of the characteristics typical to highland type chondros.

Best of luck with that animal, it's a real looker.

Thanks for the feedback. I have worked with most of the island locals but this is the only one that I have ever had that looks like this. I will investigate the highland types and try to find something similar to breed with the one I have.
