Can tiger keep healthy on only crickets?

Tadpoleo Nov 15, 2003 03:25 PM

Is this a good enough diet if I continue to dust the crickets with calcium and vit D? My salamander is not interested in earthworms, mealworms, or pill bugs. Thanks for any advice! This is the last salamander of the batch that my parents brought me from a Nebraska bait shop, and I am really wanting him to live, so I'm trying to do everything correctly.

I don't know for certain. But I do think that earthworms are better. I'd say keep trying to get him to accept worms. It's OK to let him go without food for a week or two, and perhaps after a vacation like that he'd be willing to try different foods. Some people have better luck getting a tiger to take earthworms if the worms are in a water dish.

Jennewt,
I will try and see if he will go for worms after fasting, then---maybe that's why he isn't just snapping at everything in sight, because I feed him every day or every other day? When he is in the water, his nose is out in the air and when I drop a worm in there he doesn't notice or he kind of freaks out, so I'll try the fasting route.
Thanks!

I'd opt for the fasting thing also. In fact I've done just this so that mine would have more variety in their diet instead of just crickets. I purchased plastic forceps (from lps) and started off offering mealworms from the forceps to them. Honestly, it did take probably a good month before they either trusted this technique or decided to try something different. In the meantime they got their beloved crickets, but not as many. It wasn't long after that when I was able to branch out to earthworms, nightcrawlers and a few bee moths occasionally.

That is awesome that you have conquered your little guy's cricket addiction, heh heh!! I have a pair of tweezers, so I'll start using them with the mealworms and nightcrawlers...today begins the fasting, it's gonna kill me!! Will have to keep you posted.....
