enclosure help

antares Nov 15, 2003 03:28 PM

I'm getting a new tegu soon (don't worry i've done months of research), and i want to find a nice enclosure for him. I'm looking for ideas on what i should get. What are peoples opinions on Vision tanks? they look good but don't seem to be very suitable for holding substrate, this is a concern since i know Tegus need to have burrowing space. I've been looking at some that have sliding doors in the front but again I don't get how those would hold enough substrate.

What would be more suitable, a long tank with a screen top? Or something like a Vision or melamine house?

I live on Long Island in NY so if anyone has any places that sell good enclosures nearby, let me know. Or if there are any good websites that sell ones be custom or not and worth looking at, I'd appreciate any info at all. If anyone has pictures of their tegu homes, I'd like to see those also. Thanks very much.

get a horse trough/stock tank. $100 for a 6x2x2. You can find them at any ag store. Behlencountry www.behlencountry.com/asp/catalog.asp?Product=Galvanized%20Round%20End&Family=Water%20Tanks are the makers of them. Here's some somewhat recent pics of my own.

Here's a pic of the cage I built. I think the sliding glass in the front worked out nice. When they were little and more timid it helps to be able to approach them with you're hand at their level instead of coming at them from above. Also when the door is open they can go in and out when they please.

Question for blue_tegu... how well does something like that retain heat/humidity? also what do you use to do that, just lie it across the top? and once a tegu is full grown, would it be able to climb out if there was no top?

Question for rollin... That's a nice looking enclosure, does the substrate on one side work out well? also i can't quite tell by the picture but are those sliding glass doors and regular doors next to them? i'd like to know more about how you built it because it looks like something i might want to do myself

I tell ya we made the plans for that cage with simplisity in mind. We made it 8 feet long since that's how long a sheet is (8' by 4'). We even had Home depo cut most of the boards for us. I think they did one cut per board free of charge or so much per cut.. something like that. There's only one 4' pane of glass that slides between the two 2' by 2' doors. We didn't have to paint the melamine boards and their white finish resists moisture (that stuff is heavy too). That lip on the bottom is to hold the substrait in. There's a 4' by 2' rubbermaid hide box burried under the mound, they make a curved tunnel that ends in a chamber inside of it.

Hey, that looks and sounds great. I'm terrible with carpentry so there's no way I'd ever be able to figure something like that out. If you didn't mind, could you share your building plans? I'd appreciate it to an extreme degree. If you'd prefer not to post, I could give you my email.

We use Mercury vapor light for the day, and a red light for night. They are all on timers.
