Feeding WTF

insideoutsider13 Nov 15, 2003 03:28 PM

I just got back from the breeding conference and I bought two leopard geckos, a white's tree frogs, and a bunch of supplies for both. I was able to get a few free cases of crickets and I bought two 35 count packs of mealworms. I want to try and raise the three animals all on mealworms, but I am worried that the white's tree frog will not find them. I have a container of a few mealworms off to the corner of his tank. Will he find them or will I run into trouble with using mealies?

I think the mealies will be hard to find, Like I told you before, mine only eats at night. He probaly won't eat for the first day. The one I got today hid as soon as I got him. Use the crickets you may have to dust it with calcium so it can see it better.

I don't think you should feed your WTF just mealies. In fact, I think I'd stick to mostly crickets and just offer mealies sometimes. For the leos they're perfectly fine as the staple, but they're harder to digest than crickets and have those awful "teeth," so unless you find reliable information that says otherwise I wouldn't feed too many to the WTF. Let me know if you find any info, btw, because most things I read don't recommend them for treefrogs... but they didn't used to be recommended for even leos from what I've heard.

Mine don't really like the mealies... Occasionally I can trick them into eating a couple because I normally hand feed them their crickets and they pretty much eat whatever I dangle in front of their faces, but once they catch on to what it is, they try to avoid it. Mostly my Whites just eat dusted crickets...

My geckos will eat the heck out of some mealies though...
