Breeding Red-Eyes!! HELP

PNWReptileRescue Nov 15, 2003 07:47 PM

Hello,

My name is Lenae. I run a small reptile rescue in Oregon. My husband and I currently own 3 Red-Eyes, 2 females, 1 male. The male is VERY vocal and was actually attempting to mate with one of the females last night while she was still "sleeping" on the glass. The vivarium is TOTALLY set up with a pond, lots of plants both around and above the water, sticks a small waterfall (which made him more vocal) and the proper temps and light. One of our females looks GRAVID, she is HUGE and hasn't been doing a whole lot lately. We recently tried a rainchamber (in a smaller tank so not to drowned the real plants in their vivarium) he wouldn't sing to them, they had no interest at all in doing ANYTHING in there. We put them back into their enclosure and we fed them again, really good eaters. And then purchased a "night light" he is now EVEN MORE VOCAL (believe it or not) and they are eating even better than before. But for some reason we can't get the females to want anything but to look at him like he is crazy. I know it is not necessarily the right time of year. But is it bad for her to be "gravid" and just sitting around? We occassionaly move her so she will actually go the the food dish and eat some crickets, but other than that she will stay primarily in ONE area above the water or in the oposite FAR corner.

Please help
(sorry for the gabbering)

Lenae-
It is not uncommon for female RETF to "ignore" one or two males in their enclosure. Optimally, the ratio of females to males is 1:2 and higher. They need variety! Some just wont "settle" for the "only guy around."
Your frogs are exhibiting normal breeding behaviors; Your females just aren't interested in the bachelor you have in their enclosure. Were you to add more males into the mix (slowly...over time!!!), it is more likely she will produce.
