GUTLOAD food, who do I get it from?

jrbl Nov 15, 2003 11:00 PM

I want to buy some gutload food for my feeders, but dont know who to get it from. I have seen cricketfood.com post gutload food, and it looks like good stuff. The only thing is, I have seen other gutloads from other companies that look just as good. So who do I get it from? I was leaning more towards cricketfood.com because they also sell "salad topper" and I want some of that. I just need some advice here. Thank you, jrbl

I get my gutload foods from the grocery store.I buy dark leafy greens for my crickets to eat. And I go back & forth between carrots and potatoes for their water source. The only drawback about this, is that I have to clean my cricket bins more often. Also from time to time, I feed mine a combination of Dry instant baby food, fish flakes, and Purinas cricket chow. This don't tell you where to get gutload, but I hope you find this information useful.

i have asked around about this, and for premade gutload, cricketfood.com has been recommended over and over again. it's what i use, and i actually saw a big difference. the crickets grow faster, and there is less of a die off.

We make our own. If you have a blender you can make it. You can find blenders real cheap in the thrift stores for about $5 if you don't have one. We buy our supplies in 50 pound bags, however we are feeding over 10,000 crickets a week. So we usually do 50-100 lbs when more is needed. We have a stone mill & grain grinder plus the blender. You can get most the stuff you need from either the super market, the pet store, local herb store and make it yourself and save money and most the time make a better gut load. We havd tried many of the commercial ones available and some really weren't too bad. However many contained corn as a filler and a few had the shells from the sunflower seeds and the hulls off the oats included in the meal.
We also use a product called Prozyme which we give to chams that need that extra boost. This product aids in the digestion of food. Really puts weight on your chams.
There are several recipes out there, or if you send us an e-mail we can give you the one we used when we just had a blender to process with. reptayls@yahoo.com

Hi-

I use www.cricketfood.com gutload. You can see, smell, and feel a difference with this gutload compared to other commercial available gutloads that use mostly chicken feed. You will notice very few die offs when you use this gutload. I breed my own stock of crickets and they are raised right out of the eggs on this gutload. I would recommend it. Hope this helps!

A bit more expensive but herpnutrition has good cricket food and other feeder food. They give all the ingredients right on the site and also sell a variety of supplements (not just chams.) the owner of the company is Dr. Susan Donoghue, who writes the nutrition column for Cham News.

I haven't tried cricket.com yet but they, too, have a good reputation.
