My MVB has burned out....

djfuente Nov 15, 2003 11:19 PM

It happened about a week ago and I sent it back to ZooMed because it was only 2 months old. My wuestion is if is bad that Giblet has no permanent UVB source during this time until they send one back to me. I have tried putter her next to an open window when the sun shines so that she can get some, but it is limited due to low temp and cloudiness lately. I have noticed her become just a bit lazier lately, but other than that, she eats the same.

UVB doesn't come through the glass, so don't bother with that.
Your dragon will be ok until the replacemant arrives, I've read that they store D3, for how long, I don't think anyone really knows.
Just make sure it still has a basking lamp while you wait.

Zoomed guarantees you a bulb for one year. So if you buy a bulb and it blows in 3 months there is a 9 month guarantee on the replacement. Just got to save your original receipt from the store you bought it at to show a date of purchase. I know some of the newer boxes are coming with a pre paid postage guarantee card that you fill out and send it back to zoomed to guarantee the bulbs, but I'm still getting some without the card inside so I don't know what's up with that. I just send in the card if I get one, but in the boxes I don't I just save the receipt.

T-Rex gave you a refund? T-Rex replaced the bulbs we sent back to them, no questions asked, as did ZooMed.

He will be alright without the UVB providing you regularly dust his crickets with calcium D3. Also, make sure he has enough lights on his cage it keep it bright. If it is notiveable dimmer without the UVB light, he may think it's winter and time to brumate (hybernate).

If they were ZooMed bulbs, you send 'em back to ZooMed, if they were T-Rex bulbs, you send 'em back to T-Rex, if they were Big Apple Herp bulbs, you send 'em back to Big Apple Herp, and if they were UVHeat bulbs, you send 'em back to UVHeat

Just look at the website of the company that manufactured your bulb to get their address.

I wouldn't worry about it...

Even the 160Watt powersun is only a lil bit more UVB than Texas at noon on an overcast day.

Even through the clouds some UVB is coming through... If you're giving exposure to sunlight, then things should be cool until you get the replacement bulb...

We run about a dozen powersuns here right now, and we've got 3 or 4 ready as backups in case any blow out. If the bulbs that blow are still under warranty, we send 'em back, and when the replacements arrive, they're the new backups

One thing I learned from using large halide bulbs for my, ummmmm, "garden", is you have to make sure your hands are free of any dirt or oils when you are handling the bulbs. Handling them with dirty hands can cause them to burn out much, much quicker.

I actually used to wear white cloth gloves whenever I was installing a new bulb or removing it for any reason. I also gave the bulb a wipe from a clean, solvent-ffree cloth before turning it on.

Just a suggestion from my experiences.

Yeah, good point, we use paper towels when we're touching the bulbs...

Grease from fingers can cause hot & cold spots on the bulb, and while this doesn't affect the reptile in the way heatspots do on a heat rock, it does shorten the life of the bulb.
