New Desert Horned Lizard!

Karu May 31, 2003 02:39 PM

Well today was the FIRE herp show and, although I wasn't allowed/supposed to get another herp, I did! It's the coolest little guy! I bought a little Horned Lizard! They are very cool looking.. Almost like a cross between a Uromastyx and Beardie. He's pretty small too but almost full grown. Right after I got his cage all set up I threw in a few ants. He ate them so fast it was amazing! I always love to see my herps eating on the first day! The best part about having the little guy is he eats ants that occur naturally in a protected scrub area around my house! I say "protected" because the area is home to about 60 gopher tortoises. So they don't spray any posion in there. I will post pics ASAP!

Also, do these guys need a water dish?

Here are some pictures of my desert horned lizard.

There he is!

Here is his cage. It's a 20 long. What else should I put in there?

P.S. He has already eaten 4 mealie beatles and 1 ant!

Hi Karu,

Very cute little fellow. As far as what else to put in there, well, if you have sand, bright warm UV light, and ants, that's about all you need. You might put in a little plant, like a cactus, but anything other than what you already have will just be decoration for you. He doesn't need a water bowl. You can just mist him directly periodically. Although, some of them seem to enjoy soaking in a dish once in awhile.

Are the ants you're collecting harvesters? There is a species here in Florida (P. badius), but I haven't been able to locate any near my house. I have to order them from Utah. My HLs much prefer them to any of the local ants I've found so far.

You got him at FIRE? I was thinking about going up there. Did anyone there have roundtail HLs? It might be worth the trip (about 3 hours for me) if I could get a pair of P. modestum.

I dunno what type of ant they are but I would say some sort of Desert Ant. As for the type of HL you are looking for, I'm not sure. I did see tons of different kinds there. Not sure which species tho.

I was at the F.I.R.E. show yesterday. there were alot of HL there, they even had the round tails too. Do you live in the Central FL area? I live in Orlando and it is cool to see that there are others in the area that love HLs too.

Yea, I live in Winter Springs. It was about a 15 min drive to get to the FIRE show. I'm really glad I got him. But today he doesn't seem interested in the ants. Maybe I'll just give him some time to settle in without walking around his cage too much.

Darn. I kinda wish I'd gone. I've been wanting to get some roundtails, and I'd much rather pick my own than depend on someone over the internet. But I live down in Fort Lauderdale, so it would have been a long drive for me each way. I plan to go to Daytona in August though, so I should be able to find some there.

There's almost enough Florida people here to start a Florida HL club! Too bad they're not native here. Although, periodically you hear about released ones starting small populations around the state. It sounds like they'd do well where Karu lives.
