Tail Slowing Falling Off?

soulp97 Nov 16, 2003 05:44 AM

Hi. I have two 5-month-old bearded dragons (Luca and Alex). One day i noticed that the end of Luca's tail had a small nick in it (about 1/4" from the end). It started to turn dark at the end, and when he shed, it fell off. So his tail was then 1/4" shorter than normal. It never bled or scarred. It looks like it just died at the tip.

Now, i'm noticing that this is happening again. He's got another small nick at the end and it's turning dark again. I'm just waiting for it to fall off. My other dragon, Alex, has his complete tail and shows no signs of a problem.

Is this normal?

Sometimes they chase eachother around the cage. I've never seen them bite eachother. It looks more like playing than fighting. Could Alex be injuring Luca when i'm not looking?

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks in Advance,
Jon Z.

Seperate them for gods sake. They don't like to be together, they're solitary animals. And get the one with the tail problem to a vet.

Sounds like the tail loss is due to being bitten. I would suggest housing them alone from now on.

Do bearded dragons ever play with eachother? Are they at all like puppies in this way? Or are any signs of aggression a bad thing?

"Play" ?

lets think for a minute.....

they hatch from a nest in the wild where theres no "Mom" or "dad" trying to help them, they fear beeing eaten and are looking for food and shelter.

have you ever hatched / watched a praying mantis egg case?

50% are eaten at hatching,.... the ones that run fast live.

in the wild I bet hatchling BD's scatter as they hatch and never cross paths again unless they mate or fight for teritiory.
it's the same for most preadators in the wild.
