I am having a problem with feeding my white's.

Insideoutsider13 Nov 16, 2003 08:33 AM

The problem with feeding them crickets is that the crickets can easily nuzzle down into the moss substrate that I have for the tree frog. I am thinking about taking out the bottom lair of stone and just putting in a a thin lair of the moss. How should I make it so that the crickets cannot bury but my frog can?

Your Whites should not need to burrow. They are not burrowing frogs. Try wetting and compressing the moss, or switch to a different substrate such as bed-a-beast.

Are you sure? My whites choose to bury, or hide under somthing then to be expose sleeping on the side of the tank.

I got enough of the moss so I'll just compress it, hopefully it'll work better that way.

alebron- it is not normal for WTF's to bury or sleep on the ground. this can be due to disease, but i think in your case it is due to not enough aboreal hiding spots. make sure he/she has plenty of hide spots high up in the tank, so he/she feels more secure in the 'trees'.

what type of moss do you have? is it in kinda large clumps? if so, than this is dangerous for the frog. if the frog lunges for a cricket and misses and takes a mouthful of moss he could die of intestenal impaction. if you get rid of the moss, and have some normal coco brick, or peat as a top layer substrate, this will stop the crix from hidding and get rid of a potential health hazard.

I do have a aborial hides. I have a plant in their that gives my whites plenty of hiding places, and thier is this branch like thing they like to climb up. Mine usually climb up at night on these plants and retreat to the same areas during the day.I have read that eventhough they are tree frogs, they have a terrestial side to them too. Also at an aquarium bye me I notice that their white's also burrowed.

I never see mine on the bottom of the tank... unless they are chilling in their water bowl. Otherwise, they always are either asleep in the top corners or hanging out in the tree limbs...

I had a problem for a while with my smaller one getting to eat. NOw I just hand feed them their crickets by holding the cricket in front of their face and they both eat well and get plenty. This also gives me control of who gets what and how much...

I agree with some of the others that Whites "tree" frogs should not be burrowing on the ground, from my experience with my own. Have you checked the humidity? Maybe they feel dried out or something...

Who knows? Hope you get your babies to eat better soon.

Good luck!

sorry man! what i said about the frog sleeping on the ground was for the person who initially started this post, not you! i just go mixed up with the names and wrote yours by accident!!

n e way, back to the problem..... so your frog always sleeps on the ground during the day aswell?? what are the temps in the cage?? it could possibly be more warm, or cold on the bottom, and thats why he likes it their.
