use of misting systems?

compasscreek Nov 16, 2003 11:31 AM

i have seen a couple times breeders/suppliers selling or mention using a misting system. how often do you have the system mist and for what duration. what nozzle are you using. i curently have both the rain maker and mr. moisture so it would only be a matter of setting the misting time(s) and getting the correst nozzle.

Hi Dennis,
It really depends on a lot of factors in the vivarium. The size, tempature, ventilation, and what kind of drainage system you have play big roles in determining wether your misting system will be the best thing you've ever bought, or the worst thing imagineable.

I used a rainmaker jr. with the standard red nozzles (check out www.cloudtops.com/ to find out the exact specs for their nozzles) for one of my first few crappy-no-experience-vivariums and it was hell. I used 4 nozzles, and had it spray for the max allowed time by the pump and the timer. That wound up being 14 cycles each about 3 minutes long (cant remember for sure). To make a long story short, all the plants died quickly and the substrate was soaking wet all the time. Anyway, I ended up burning-out the pump after letting it run dry for a few seconds.

A year or so went by and I learned that in order to use a misting system I needed some form of ventilation. For my cobalt tinc hexagon vivarium ImageEvent.com/audiomaster/40gallonhexagon/ I have a good ventilation system and the misting times are a lot less frequent and not as long. Im using 4 red nozzles aimed at different areas of the tank that mist once every 2 hours for 2 minutes each time. Also, about 30 minutes after each misting, the ventilation fans go on for about 5 minutes to dry things off a bit and keep the orchids from rotting. Well, I hope this lengthy post helps you a bit. If you have any further questions, feel free to reply to this or emial me personally. Talk to you later.

Do you wrap the root bundle in sphagnum or do you just attach it naked to the background?

Thanks

I just attached them bare-root to the background. The foam under the primer mix works amazingly well for holding plants. I just used heavy wire to make U shaped "staples" to attach them just above the roots and below the leaves (I guess thats called the crown ). They've all rooted to the point where I removed the wire and they hold themselves in place now.

You should think about adding audiotaylor’s site to the links page. It is a great example of the concrete bonder/foam background.
