why wont my RES get out of the water and sun himself?

imlorilynn Nov 16, 2003 01:55 PM

I put slate in the tank and made steps with it so he CAN get up there( out of water) but... he just sits in one corner and NEVER gets out of the water. My sister-in-law suggested that I cover the sides of the tank. I did, and he still stays under water!? Why could this be, and what could I do? Dont they need to dry out every now and then?? Also, he is not eating as far as I know.I know I said the same thing in my last post, but just incase the two relate. Thanx to whomever replies.

Hmm...i first thought maybe it was hard for him to get on the rock..but once u said he just sits in one place and dosent move...and he also dosent eat...to me it sounds like the water is too cold...try bumpin the temp up to like 78...and once ur turtle feels more "alive"...he'll start eating and basking

I agree with Peyman. The inactivity really suggests that the turtle is cold. Reptiles will get inactive when they are cold.

IF your water temp is already up, indicating that this isn't the problem, it's possible that the water is too warm. Turtles don't know that they need to dry their shells every once in a while. They get out to bask for the heat. If their water is warm enough, they have no need to get out and bask.

Usually, a turtle not basking is caused by incorrect water and basking temps which don't promote basking. So try as Peyman suggested first, then if that's not it, play with it a bit.

Also, keep a look out for other signs that may indicate a sickness.

I keep my water temp at about 72-74 and my basking area near 90. I have one RES and 2 map turtles, and they seem to like it that way. They're all about 3" long, and I havn't had even the first hint of shell rot or any sickness.

water and basking temps are. Please give the information
if you would like suggestions. Did you try anything I mentioned
in that earlier post.

Isnt 72-74 just room temp.? I would think the water would be room temp if kept in room temp. right?

It depends on the temperature of your room. I keep my thermostat at 72 during the day but I think the water could get cooler than that, and it goes down to 68 at night...too cold for turtles. Get a thermometer for under $2 at the pet store and then you will know for sure whether or not your water is a good temp.
