Where can I get long tailed salmanders?

bcwisme May 31, 2003 03:39 PM

I was wondering where I could get a couple long tailed salmanders (Eurycea longicauda), or some cave salamanders (Eurycea lucifuga) if it is at all possible?

How ironic. I work for a small museum that is about to go through a big expansion. The higher-ups have produced a list of animals they want to exhibit, included on the list are the long tailed salamander and the cave salamander. I have been given very little input on the process of deciding what animals to exhibit, so as you can imagine I'm not too thrilled about their choices.

One thing I have to worry about is actually getting these animals and keeping them healthy in captivity. Secondly, I think it is unrealistic to expect to adequately display these animals.

Can anyone provide input on not only collecting these in the state of Virginia, but also how to exhibit these animals so they are actually visible to the visitors?

Hi, I live in nearby Maryland and occasionally find them in Rocky areas around creeks in the fall, but they are very hard to find. You often have to move many large rocks to find them. Glades Herp sometimes has them available, try there.

I was looking around and I found a site that might sell Cave salamanders, but they don't give any info. about ordering, or anything at all! Doesn't look to promising... it's probably no good...
