Mealworms for cresteds.

CCappy175598 Nov 16, 2003 05:05 PM

I just got my two cresteds today from the philly expo. Is it ok to feed mealworms instead of crickets, because frankly crickets suck and are hard to catch when they hide in the fake plants. Mealworms are easy to serve because you just put them in the little bowl. I have also provided each with peach babyfood mixed with turkey baby food and crested gecko supplement by t-rex powder. Hopefully they will realize thats there tonight. The small (possible) female (3.5 months old) is housed sepeartely in a smaller vertical tank with screen lid. She found the 4 crickets I put in there and ate them all up. But the male seems to be a bit scared in his 38 gal. reptarium thats standing vertical. I think its to big for him, but Im not about to buy another tank for him right now. I put his food mixture on this shelf thing and put a few crickets in there, I dont think he'll find them though....

so mealworms, yes, no?

Mealworms have too much chiton and are really a lousy protein source. I only feed them when I'm going on vacation for a while so my herps will have something to eat while I'm gone...then it's back to crickets. Crickets are a bit tricky, but not impossible. One cool thing about cresteds is that they can climb glass...something crickets can't do. When I feed my treefrogs, I use glass dishes like you find for jello in the dishware section of department stores. The little gutloaded beggers scramble like crazy going nowhere while the redeyes eat at their leisure. And there is always plan "B"...pinch the back legs off like I do for my leopard religiously. They will stay put in a dusted cermic feeding dish that way. I can't stand vermin running loose with my herps. You might consider silkworms as a alternative. They're fatty like waxworms, but the protein ratio is off the charts.
