My Herp Enclosure Take 2!

beazalbob Nov 16, 2003 06:25 PM

Ok here is my new improved Treefrog tank and my new Tokay Tank. I released the 2 Cuban Treefrogs and the American toad. I moved the Tokay Gecko into his own 20 gallon tank. These 2 tanks are'nt totally completed yet so if anybody can suggest any improvements feel free to share them. The plants are a mix of real and phony. The light is a reptilight so I think it will be good for the plants. I used forest floor for the bedding it's the stuff you add water to and it expands. Put moss on top of that. I have the 2 Gray treefrogs and the still unknown Green treefrog in the tank. The unknown Green treefrog is not a Hyla Cinerea(Green Treefrog) we have them all over the place in Florida. This frog is much larger. Here is a picture of the Treefrog.

Sorry for the lousy pic my camera isnt good at closeups.
Here are the Treefrog tank pics.

Here are the Tokay Gecko tank pics.

I hope these setups are better than the old tank setup.

Oh, God, why did you release the Cubans? They're horrible!

I released them because that is where I found them and I could'nt kill them even if they are an invasive species. I did'nt introduce them to Florida and putting 2 Cubans back isnt going to make any difference in the grand scheme of things.

Well, you don't have to kill them, either. I still think it's better to kill them than release them, but I just keep them, even if I can't give them an optimal environment. I have 3 in a 20-gallon, for example. I also raised some froglets as well as gave a large female to a petstore because I couldn't keep them.

Two may not make a difference in the grande scheme of things, no, but they'll make a difference to quite a few treefrogs and other native animals a year who'll be feasted on by these Cubans. For those two Cubans, maybe 50 native treefrogs a year will get eaten that may have survived, otherwise.

MUCH better!!! And they look real nice too. I'm sure your critters will be much happier now too having more roaming space and not having to avoid tankmates.

I agree that releasing the Cuban's may not have been the best idea, but it isn't like you bred them then released them. I have 4 adult males myself and used to have over 30 babies that I was struggling with trying to figure out what to do with. It's not easy finding homes for them LOL I got lucky though and found someone with a 100 gallon they were looking to fill. He also aquired a second huge tank so that he could keep the males and females separate to avoid any futur breeding.

I'm glad that you separated your gang. Now you'll get to see what they are like when more at ease with their enviroment!!! How fun!
