Help, my beardie just laid eggs!

poisonfrog420 Nov 16, 2003 07:05 PM

I just got 1.4 adult bearded dragons about 2 weeks ago. I was told that they had not been burmating so I figured it would be a while before I had any problems with eggs, but I was wrong! Any way, one of the females laid 15 small eggs. I do not think they are fertile, but put them in the incubator any way. I do not think they are fertile because they seem too small (I have never seen beardie eggs in person) and they have a yellow tinge to them. Please look at the pic let me know if you think they are ok. Thanks, Jake.

I was thinking it would still be at least until after christmas before I would need to worry about eggs, next time I will be ready. Do they seem small to you? Also, what does everyone use as a laying box? Do you think wet sand bunched up in a corner would be a good laying media? Thanks for your help, Jake.

Just sand doesn't bind together well enough. I use a 50/50 mix of clean potting soil and sand. This is placed in a large rubbermaid tub and filled about 1/2 way. I also moisten the soil/sand mix and slope it up on both ends. (Not dripping wet, just enough so the dirt mix binds together) I also place a heat lamp over the laying tub on one side.

You can tell when she is getting close to laying because often times they stop eating and are constantly digging around looking for a place to lay. This can go on for days....... When she does this, it is time to transfer her to the laying tub.

The laying box is seperate from their normal enclosure... it is one of those BIG colord plastic tubs you buy at walmart and use for storage or moving, etc.

One looks kinda 50/50 but the others look bad. Not only are they a bad color, but they are deformed in shape.

Sorry

This is what good eggs look like .. keep in mind this is as they were starting to hatch.

Thanks, that was kind of what I was thinking. Do you think the eggs should be that small or do they tend to grow as they come closer to hatching? Do you think that she laid duds or do you think they turned bad because I did not catch them in time? If she lays another clutch in the next few months will they also be bad? Thanks, Jake.

Forgot to mention... they are fairly small when first laid. I would say 2 x a leo egg. They get bigger as they incubate.

If you know what a good leo egg looks like, use that as a guide for your beardie eggs for color, texture, etc.
