Searching Capability

Homer1 Nov 16, 2003 07:13 PM

Hey, everyone, I know there has been some frustration about the recent (consisten) barrage of questions by newcomers about topics that have been frequently asked here. I know it gets frustrating at times, and the first reaction that we have is: "search the archives".

Well . . . searching the forum is not as easy as it used to be. When we all started here on the old system, you could actually search the Arrow Frog forum exclusively for questions to your answers. Now, when you search, you get hits from all sites under the kingsnake banner (who cares about gerbils, for crying out loud! Just a joke. ).

When I asked about searching individual forums, I was informed that the capabilities are not yet present with the new system, but they hope to have it in the future. So until then, let's keep that in mind with the newcomers. We were all there once, but I do realize that many of us had the foresight to use Google to find some of the good primers on the web before playing 20 questions.

I personally was never that impressed with the Kingsnake forum format (I prefer the EZboard format where the threads move to the top when someone adds a message) but the upgrade has made it worse, mainly for the reason you've pointed out. It's more of a downgrade from a usability standpoint. I find myself often going to the old forum archive, where you can still search by individual forum. I hate to point newbies to searching through posts that are over 6 months old, though.

I am a new dart frog hobbyist. I absolutely fell in love with them.

Anyway, when I found this forum I had so many questions, some of which I posted. Later when I discovered the search function, I found that most of my questions had already been answered before. The search function on this board is hard to find, and even after that hard to use, as it give all results, not just those from this board. In addition, you have to search 2 different archives.

What we need is a FAQ page or a sticky post with the most commonly answered questions regarding mixing of frogs, fruit fly culture recipes, etc....these questions are on every beginner's mind and will be asked time and time again. I think that would help in the frustration most oldtimers feel at answering these questions over and over again. Also, it would help the board be less cluttered, with only new information and ideas being discussed.

Is there a moderator reading this who would like to post their thoughts on this?

lol, im just going to copy and paste the same message i typed about 2 hours ago :

The mods dont care, I have asked for the same thing atleast 3 times. They get all upity if you say something bad about their sponsers, but they wont help us (not just people that know a bit, but the new people too) by having a sticky post. I event typed up an entire "report" for newbies with a lot of basic info. I think ill spell check it today and post it tonight (edit: just posted it). Its been over a month since i posted it...
