Can turtles hear ?

Sharie Nov 16, 2003 07:40 PM

I've always wondered if my RES could hear me. Can they ? and if so, where are ears located? One day my friend was holding him and she said when I spoke he would stop and lift his head as if looking for me. ( I was out of sight ) Since I am the only one who cares for him, and he has lived in my room for the past year, it is possible that he reconizes me and my voice ?

And the same friend recently found out her mother has adopted a turtle from someone who didnt want it. Her mother is keeping it in a 10 gal tank in about 2 inches of water, with a rock. Theres no light, no heat. She did the right thing to rescue it, but my friend and I have decided to rescue it from her. The problem is how. We don't think she will give it up or fix the conditions. We both hardly go there, so we'd have to make a special trip. Any suggestions ?

i dont know if the turtles can hear...sometimes i wonder because when i try to wake up the turtle, i'll say "turtle, turtle" and it keeps sleeping. and when i shake the tank a little it will wake up.

and about that lady---i would go visit...and then say "OHMYGOSH!!!! I LOVE YOUR TURTLE." and then pick it up and say "hi" to it and then say 'I LOVE the turtles temperment, he would do GREAT with my turtle.' and then talk about how you've been looking for the perfect friend or something.

make it seem as though she'd be doing the greatest favor for you. and that its for your current turtle or something.

i hope that works.

Yes, they hear just fine, their ears are right on the sides of their heads.
