Pictus Keepers Please Read...

I traded yesterday for a small group of Pictus geckos at the Dixie Reptile Show, and I have a few questions. I did of course check out care sheets a week or so ago, so I've got the basic setup. I have 4 juveniles in a 20 breeder on paper towels with hide boxes on hot & cool sides. Hot side probably somewhere around 85-88, cool side mid-70s. Misting 2x daily. Feeding 1/4 inch crickets. So here are my additional questions that were not covered by caresheets - at what weight are females okay to breed? Can 2.2 stay in the same 20 breeder, or are males aggressive toward each other? I'm assuming theyare aggressive, but the care sheets don't say anything about it. Do they like baby food, or would I be wasting my time? Which is dominant, stripe or banded? I have 3 stripes and one banded. One male is clearly sexable, the others look female but are really too young to tell conclusively. Anybody have good pics of the different morphs like xanthic? Thanks for any help!

I have a few answers for you. First off, you are most likely going to have problems with keeping two males together. I would separate one male and possible rotate them during breeding. Both of my pictus geckos are about 7 months, and three inches long, and have already bred. The interesting thing is, though the female will only usually have one egg per clutch, it only takes one time for the male to mate with her to have several clutches. You can put a male in with a female for only one night, and you may get 4 or 5 clutches out of her just from that one encounter. They are extremely easy to breed, but the eggs are very delicate. I wouldn't even suggest touching them with your fingers. I'd give them a good variety of crickets, meal worms, and wax worms. I've found that they enjoy digging trenches to sleep in, as I find them pretty deep in the substrate often. A simple lay box is good, I have mine just in a mealworm container filled with moist vermiculite. The female is obviously large before laying her egg, so you will see a signifigant growth in her size. You may even get another clutch as soon as 8 days after your first one. As far as pattern based dominance, I have no idea. But I hope that this was of some help to you, good luck with your new geckos!

I keep and breed paroedura picta alot here. I have hypos, xanthics, and albinos, hets. First...Do Not keep males together, they will kill one another! You can keep upwards of 5 females with any single male. The temps. are right. But if you are keeping more than 2 in any single cage, increase hide-spots. I have pictures of my albinos, and some hypos, 3 stripes. I am currently selling my albino project if yo are intersted my email is dwgeckos@yahoo.com
I have many pictus available right now to anyone who is intersted. Thanks, and email me if you have any questions. Leland(Doc)Ward-D.W.Geckos
