Is it bad to have a snake and a bearded dragon?

smurfskill Nov 16, 2003 09:16 PM

I probably got your attention...thinking i meant in the same enclosure

well

I don't mean that at all. In the same room, but different enclosures. I know snakes carry parasites and mites that bearded dragons can get very sick off of, so is it a bad idea to have both of them in the same room? handling both of them and letting them both hang out in my room outside of the enclosures? (seperately, with my supervision of course)

hi,

i don't believe thats its a bad idea unless you know that the snakes that are being housed by the beardie have parasites....i have 2 bearded dragons that live io the same room as my snakes, and i've nevr had a problem. i keep cardboard between the cages so that the bearded dragons don't see the snakes because they can become nervous and go off feed.

good luck with ur beardie

As long as the snake has no mites or ticks, it shouldn't be a problem...

We've got corn snakes (in neodesha display cages), and bearded dragons (in reptariums & neodesha 32" stackable cages) in the same room for a few months now, and we've had no problems at all.

I know many other people who keep lizards and snakes (and small crocodilians) in the same rooms and have no problems.

Like the others have said, I haven't had any troubles either. Main thing to keep in mind is to just always wash your hands between handlings of the two. For one, to make sure there's no transfer of bacteria or parasites, but also so your snake doesn't smell lizard and think your hand is food. Good luck!

Yeah, good point, forgot to mention that... Many people I know now who have many animals keep a bottle of hand cleansing gel in their herp rooms and use it after every animal (even if they're only handling animals of one species), just in case.

i also have snake and lizards in same room, just now i have a beardie and a corn snake in same room, they cant see each other so theres no stressing each other out

It's fine, like everyone has said, to have them in the same room. I would keep the snakes hidden from the bds though, it does cause stress. I keep many snakes in my reptile room along with my bds... even Western Hognoses... and they EAT lizards! (Well, in the wild!)

Good luck!

P.S. I hope you have a lot of room, your post sounds like the beginning of a life-long addiction to reptiles... CONGRATS!
