I got him from a pet store, and Im just wondering how old he is (approximatly). His shell is almost exactly 3" wide and about 4" long. anyone have an idea?

You can't tell age from size, sliders grow based on how much they are fed and how they are taken care of.

my turtle is about that size and 6 yrs old. BUT, i had it in a fish bowl for a long time because i did not know anything about RES. so i could have made it grow slow...you know?

yeh in ur case it is hard to say how old they are...but my turtles are that size and they are 2 years old...so i would guess maybe urs 2-3 years old
