well, my first inclination is to say that if you are buying it from someone who can't tell you what it is you ought to look elsewhere. That said. Yellows are, gee, yellower, and have a black tongue. Everglades are oranger with a red tongue.

well you see ,,the reptile community here is very very small. so snakes here are so expensive,,a baby normal corn snake would be like 250$ if it was an anerythetic it would be about 500$ . so i dont really have a choice

YIKES! Where are you? That is too bad. At any rate that is the best way I can think of to tell the two apart. Age will tell. Both have similar care so either way.

you have. The only limit to the questions is when you feel you have all the info you need. The field guides and spec sheets distinguish the yellow rat snake and the everglades rat snake like this. The yellow rat snake background color is bright yellow or pale brown with 2 dark brown dorsal stripes and a dark brown stripe on each side of the body. This only applies to an adult specimen about 3 years and older. The tongue is dark or black on the yellow rat snake. The Everglades rat snake background color is bright orange, sometimes orange/brown or orange/yellow with faint or faded looking gray stripes. The field guides and pet trade will state that the tongue is red. This is partially true. The tongue is red, but not completely red. Good luck with your new addition. I have both yellow rat snakes and Everglades rat snakes in my collection and I love working with each.
