Sounds do-able. I read once about someone who used sand as a substrate (Calcisand I think), poured water on it & let it dry. It formed a hard surface, which was similar to the hard dirt in their natural environment.

It was tropical playground sand....i baked it then ran it under hot water to sterilize it and put it inthe tank wet and press it down into the shape i wanted then let it dry out and put my gecko back in.....it stays hard and compacted with little loose grains of sand scattered.....just like in their natural habitat..i should have a pic in a few days
