Rack Humidity Question...

fireresq42 Nov 17, 2003 02:18 PM

Hello all,
Has any one ever had the problem with Humidity in a closed rack? I recently moved all my BP's into a closed rack system and I'm running about 100% humidity in each tub @82 night and 90 day temp.. Lg tub 30 qt and small tub 14qt. I have started using a substrate I got at the white plains NY show which is compressed pellets of news print which I got from the guy that sells the hissing roaches right when you walk in.. Anyway, my next step is switching to chipped aspen substrate.. If any one has had this problem or may have a solution i.e.... drilling more hole, small water dish ect.. please share it will be much appreciated..

thanks
A

Sounds like a ventilation problem. How many holes do you have in each tub? Is your water bowl sitting on a UTH? If so, this will put more moisture into the air. Try moving the water bowl off the UTH. I've heard Apen retains moisture and may mold. If your humidity is that high you may be looking at another problem. Try getting the humidity under control before switching to aspen. Add a little more information to your post, like ventilation holes, size of water dish, etc.

I have one row of holes about an inch apart all the way around the tubs.. They are made with a sodering iron.. The water dish holds about 2 cups of water and they are on the cool side of the tub...

I think the previous post was right....ventilation is probably the culprit. If possible, ventilate the top. Since heat rises top ventilation tends to be more effective with regard to providing air exchange, but any additional ventilation will help. I assume this is a "between-the-shelf" type rack system. If so, top ventilation may not be possible.

It is that type of rack.. The tubs just fit with no tops.. i love the rack but this issue is killing me.. I will pop more hole higher on the tubs tonight to see if that helps...
