BASILISK ENCLOSURE....DOES THIS SOUND GOOD???

cv768 Nov 17, 2003 02:21 PM

We are going to build an enclosure that will be made from malamine (particle board with water resistant outer shell)and it should be 4'w x 4'l x 3'h I will put in an underbed storage container for a soaking bowl and the top will be hinged and screened with metal...so the enclosure should be 360 gallons when it's done.

There will be 3 basilisks going into this enclosure...How does this sound??

Any suggestions on building???

Sorry to tell you that that sounds very bad to me. Not only is 360 g IMHO too small for a trio, but a height of only 3 ft is absolutely not enough for basilisks. Height of a basilisk tank should be 5 ft at its very least, but better 6-8 ft.
If you search the forum, you may find my caresheet for green basilisks which includes my recommendations on housing.
These don´t com just out of my stomach. I breed plumed basiliscs now in the fourth generation and I think I have gathered some experiences (next year my book on this species will appear).
Tanks of the dimensions you describe do not allow natural behaviour of the animals.
However, there are lots of lizards out there, which would do very well in your tank.
Why don´t you go for some of these?
