I have my first beardie and............

jlizard Nov 17, 2003 04:55 PM

I have a few questions

his basking temp is exactley 107 and his warm end temp is 85-87 cool end 76-77. plenty warm right?

he is only 7 inches and hes in a 50 gallon tall tank. 38x18 or something is this to big becaue he seems like he waits for the crickests to come to him and then when one does he eats it but so fa i only witnessed about him eating about 2 salads and 10 crickets i had him since saturday. I always see him close his eyes contendently and sometimes it just dosntseem right wen i hold him and he just lays there almost like hes dead im pretty scared hes cleared by the vet so i ruled out parasites and i always hear how your beardies eat alot i have him on repcal supplements and the crickets and salads wereboth dusted a lil bit.

another question i have is at 7inches how old do you think he is.
and is all of the above is this normal for a beardie just getting used to his nerw cage and accimilating o yeah his name is RUDY

I would guess that a 7" beardie is around 2 - 3 months old. Yeah, the 50 gallon is probably too big for him. He may not feel safe being in such a large enclosure or he may be fine. You can always section off half of the tank for him to live in until he gets bigger.

Your temps look good. I wouldn't change anything there. One question for you though - what are you using to measure the temps?

I would recommend feeding crickets in a seperate container like a large rubbermade bin (photo below)

I find that it's much easier for my beardies to catch the crickets this way. And there's no crickets left over to come out at night and chew on your beardie.

Young beardies tend to mostly eat crickets (protein and calcium). Their bodies require the protein and calcium to grow. As he gets older, he will take more of an interest in his greens. But you can feed him as many calcium-dusted crickets that he will eat in a 5 - 10 minute period twice or three times a day. Even though he doesn't eat much salad, continue to offer it daily.

When you say that he doesn't act right when you hold him, this could be due to stress since you just got him not long ago. Give him some time to settle in and get used to you.

Hope this helps.

Other than the tank being a bit big, he seems like he is doing great!
If you have only had him since saturday and have actually witnessed him eating a few times, etc... that is a good sign!

Sounds like you did your homework.. always nice to see someone on here that did their homework before they got their dragon.

hey,

it sounds like u have a textbook setup....therefore i don't think it is the cage......although at 7 inches maybe it could be a little to big......i kept my 2 in a 10 gal till the were round about 6 inches then they upgraded to there 48 by 24 by 24 that they now live in at 18 months old.....ur heating seems perfect with the basking temps and such.......maybe the cage is too big or maybe he is just acclimating to it.......i would let him adjust (not handeling him) for a few days and offer him his normal salads and crickets......(make sure that the crickets he dosen't eat by bedtime are removed)( he won't like that)....possibly offer him a treat(waxworm or 2...etc.) other than that i can't offer much more advice
