Ideally, you would have a diagnosis before you begin treatment! In other words, doing a fecal float and identifying the parasites found. If there is no need to use Panacur, then don't use it. Flagyl is the same way, except even more so since does not have the humongous range of safe dosage of Panacur. I am not aware of any problems with these drugs that are unique to hognoses. Flagyl can be lethal in Lampropeltis and dosages that are fine for other colubrids (>100mg/kg). Consider lurking on the Health forum, there are frequent discussions on parasites. Although a prophylactic treatment of Panacur and Flagyl is not unheard of, you are taking less of a risk by determining its need first.

I've used flagyl without problems. The use was unjustified. I had a wild eastern and normally fed it live toads with no ill consequences to the snake. I somehow (I don't remember the details, 14 yrs old) acquired some Mexican flagyl. I'm equally uncertain on the pill weight. However, on several occasions, I would put a half-tab of flagyl in a toads mouth and then feed the snake. Never a problem. I kept the snake for about 5 years before giving it to a friend. The flagyl wasn't needed, but that dosage (whatever it was) didn't affect the snake. I had the hog for more than 3 years before the flagyl "treatments." Likewise, the live toads didn't pose a problem. Currently, if I have a healthy snake, I don't worry about treatment. Shane
Shane we all know you are an illegal drug trafficker from south of the border and know exactly where you got that panacur :-P

C'mon Andy, I didn't "ingest." LOL. It wasn't Panacur, it was Flagyl. Speaking of Panacur, if you like to munch on Speckled trout, you should consider giving them a dose of Panacur before you eat them. Those specks harbor quite a few "worms." Later, Shane
Yeah well I figure if I eat them live, it isn't any worse. I like flounder better anyway. Long live the flatfish! When you finally going to get your slow butt down here for some fishin'?

You've got it nailed. Spanish Mack slices are very good sashimi! I doubt I'll make it down until sometime in Febuary. I'm off to Japan in a few weeks. I'll make it down there before March. If you can pull it off, try to plan on a night-speck excursion in late Febuary. Regardless, late Febuary is the start of the holbrooki and atrox season along the coast. If you can't make the fishing trip, we'll do some herping. Shane

I don't think that anybody in the veterinary field would consider an apparently healthy snake a reason not to investigate parasites. There is a lot that can go on in a reptile's body before it manifests into symptoms recognizable by most hobbyists. If you believe in preventative maintenance on your vehicle, it does not hurt to get a fecal float every six months.
