they will continue to drop in price quickly.
Snakes in general (including more difficult to
produce recessive traits) will always drop in price
until the market reaches an equalibrium point (which
is a different price for each morph...).
Since pastels are co-dominant, they will drop in price
much faster. If you have one male, and a lot of females,
you can produce a lot of pastels quickly.
That being said...I still think they are a beautiful snake AND
a great investment for someone wanting to pay for their hobby.
Assume for a moment that you pay $800 for a pastel male. You
breed him in one year and have just 2 clutches of 6 eggs each.
Statistically, you should get ~6 pastel babies. If you can
only sell the males for $400 and the females for only $900 each
(assuming that the prices have dropped over the course of a year),
you would make $3900 from in your FIRST YEAR (assuming 3 male
and 3 female babies). $800 to make $3900 in one year...sounds
like a good investment to me! Of course, there are a lot of
other expenses along the way, but keep in mind that if you
take good care of your animals you can breed them year after
year after year. At some time in the distant future males *may*
only cost ~$250 and females maybe ~$350. Even then, using the
above 2 clutch example, you would still pocket $1800 a year for
doing what we like to do anyhow...breed ball pythons! The above
doesn't even bring into the picture the super pastels you may
produce...
With continued good fortune, I'll be lucky enough to produce a
bunch of pastels this season...
Good luck to all!
