do you think pastels are under rated

raaarj2 Nov 17, 2003 07:35 PM

I just wanted to say that I think pastels are under rated due to the fact that you can buy a het albino pair for 1000 and pay the same for a pastel but when you breed the hets together you get what 25% albino's but when you breed two pastels together you get 25% super pastels which are way more valuble i think the price of pastels should go up jmo Thanks Robert

they will continue to drop in price quickly.

Snakes in general (including more difficult to
produce recessive traits) will always drop in price
until the market reaches an equalibrium point (which
is a different price for each morph...).
Since pastels are co-dominant, they will drop in price
much faster. If you have one male, and a lot of females,
you can produce a lot of pastels quickly.

That being said...I still think they are a beautiful snake AND
a great investment for someone wanting to pay for their hobby.
Assume for a moment that you pay $800 for a pastel male. You
breed him in one year and have just 2 clutches of 6 eggs each.
Statistically, you should get ~6 pastel babies. If you can
only sell the males for $400 and the females for only $900 each
(assuming that the prices have dropped over the course of a year),
you would make $3900 from in your FIRST YEAR (assuming 3 male
and 3 female babies). $800 to make $3900 in one year...sounds
like a good investment to me! Of course, there are a lot of
other expenses along the way, but keep in mind that if you
take good care of your animals you can breed them year after
year after year. At some time in the distant future males *may*
only cost ~$250 and females maybe ~$350. Even then, using the
above 2 clutch example, you would still pocket $1800 a year for
doing what we like to do anyhow...breed ball pythons! The above
doesn't even bring into the picture the super pastels you may
produce...
With continued good fortune, I'll be lucky enough to produce a
bunch of pastels this season...

Good luck to all!

well if that's the case why aren't all the other co-dom balls the same price or close to it the only reason they are so cheap is cause they are so cheap if they were the same price as a spider then there wouldn't be alot of them and the price would drop really slow BTW you do need them to produce supers, bumble bees ect. so they should be at least the price of mojaves JMO Thanks

Pastels have been around for longer and there's more of them. More people getting them because they can afford them, therefor productions is higher. Just because its the same genetics, doesn't mean the price is going to be the same, LOL! If that was the case, then pieds would drop to albino prices, clowns would drop to pied prices, and striped would drop to clown prices.

Genetics played a part in why Pastels dropped in price. They were easy to make so even the newcomers could afford to obtain one and make a ton of them. Spiders are out of 99% of the snake breeder's price range, so only a select few people are producing/working with them. These select few want the price to stay high to recoup their initial investment. And rightly so.

What I wanted to know was why and you said they was AROUND longer o.k. I see now Thanks

do any of you think super pastels or lemon pastels will drop in price over the next 6-7 years?

jeff favelle Nov 18, 2003 07:40 PM

Of course they will drop. Everything does. But no matter what it drops to, people will still make money at them. But it all depends on how much you want to make. If you want to make $5,000, then wait 10 years and buy a Super for $1,000 and breed it with a few normals/Pastels. If you want to make a $100,000, buy one NOW and start making Pastels and Supers.
