Brown Boiga dendrophila

rearfang Nov 17, 2003 09:04 PM

I just came into posession of a small(1 ft)Boiga dendrophila...origion unknown. The color is as follows; Bands yellow on head and neck fading to white on body...which they completely encircle. body color brown fading to brownish white on the veneer. The eyes are normal for the species. Has anyone got any information on this morph?

No, but now I want one lol. Sounds a bit like boiga irregularis, I believe you when you say its dendrophilia but tell me does it look similar to irregularis?

could it be some genetic mutation to the skin pigment? It might be a valuable snake..U might wana think of breeding it.

Actually it looks a this point like a baby California king (It has that lavender brown look to it but is darker ) but it is definitly B.d. Unfortunatly it is a bit too small for my camera to ge a good shot of it. When I can I will post it.

Took it out into the sun and the eyes are gray (with black pupils)...It really looks like a "Hypo"

That the snake could be hypomelanistic. If you take away a good portion of the melanin that give the mangrove snake its black color, the result would be a brown body with probably subdued bands. The cal king similarity you describe certainly points to this. But I'd like to ask, how is it you determined that it is for sure dendrophila? With an odd color like that, there are a few Boiga that might fit, including but not limited to irregularis (though it's doubtful you'd see any of those in the states) or blandingi. Definitely get some pics of this snake!

The scalation, pattern, head and body shape exactly match my other two B.d.s The only difference in pattern is the bands meet in most places dorsally. If you look at ALBINOS by Steven Broghammer page 75 there is a photo of an albino. Darken the brown and make the eyes light gray with black pupils and you will come close to this snake. I have a problem with posting on this site but I will contact you independantly (and other interested parties when a good photo is available and maybe one of you will have better success posting it (I am lousy with computers) At present it is small(1') and very thin so I am trying to get it's weight back up before I photograph it.
