the cage is finally ready to be lived in!

compasscreek May 31, 2003 06:19 PM

i spent my morning rehooking up my mister and looking for a new ficus and we are now ready to go...just waiting on the chameleon. LOL!

the ficus i had was a verigated ficus and in repotting it and washing it i put it into shock pretty bad. we got a benjamini ficus that is a little more bushy and WAS about 3 inches to big...hack hack hack....i trimmed it down to fit the cage. after that i added a dose of vitamin B just in case.

next i moved to the misting system. i cut all the zip ties and positioned the nozzle whee i wanted it over the plant and then cut a small hole in the top of the cage to poke the tip though. i had the nozzle just resting on top and misting though the mesh. although it worked i kept think there has got to be a better way(thanks john!). it works ALOT better now! more directional.

now i just have to wait PATIENTLY for my new "toy"i know it's not a toy. i know better then that so don't beat me down.) kamerflage kreations said the end of may so i'm guessing in the next week? i've been to the local reptile store every week since just to look around. i'm dying to buy some crickets but i know i gotta wait it out.

my other ficus, if it lives, i will use in an outside cage. i'm going to wait though and when our chameleon out grows the current cage i will use it for outside and get a bigger on for inside.

i'm rambling i know!

Congrats on being all ready! The Kammers are great to deal with, you will be pleased I am sure! Even tho you don't buy your crix yet, be sure you have an appropriate setup.

All ficus can be tempermental so don't be surprised if you get leaf drop. Just keep it misted, which obviously you'll be doing, and if you have to put in some plastic stuff (ick - I know just until your ficus settles in so be it.

Are you getting a baby/juvi?

As for rambling...believe me, you'll be doing a lot more! It's so exciting isn't it??? I spend hours every day fussing (or just watching) with my little kids. I have a tarantula as well, and I feel as tho' I have been neglecting her as of late She recently molted and has a big appetite so I feed her a lot LOL!

Keep us posted!

LOL

Well, if it helps at all when I was a 14 y.o girl I had a 3.5' kingsnake as a pet! I am now 48 amd very much alive to tell about it The only reason I finally let it go was b/c I had to feed it mice and I had had them as pets once so I had to make a choice...the snake had to go (but just into our back yard

Yeah, it's funny how people are so afraid of snakes and spiders. When you think about it, it is so ingrained in our "being" b/c as a matter of survival our ancestors (way back) HAD to be afraid of them! I think those of us who have overcome that are pretty cool - tho' had we been our ancestors - well...we probably wouldn't have lived long! ha-ha!

Enjoy!

You let a captive raise snake go into the wild?

It probably didn't live long.

lele Jun 01, 2003 09:56 AM

Well, to begin with I was 14 years old (1968) HOWEVER....it was not captive bred. Some friends of mine found it while landscaping and knew I would like it so they built me a beautiful huge cage (wish I had it now!) and I kept it for a couple weeks. I bought a white mouse from the pet store for $.25 and everyday I would look in its cage and see the mouse cowering in the corner. B/c I'd had mice as pets when I was younger I just couldn't bear it any longer so I let the snake go and returned the mouse to the pet shop! This is why I don't/won't own an animal that eats live mammals - I don't eat meat and my cats get a great (albeit expensive) food with no meat products. Sometimes I even have a tough time feeding the big crix to my T b/c I have reared so many mini-beasts for fun education!

Anyway, I know some of you will be shaking your head saying "this chick is nuts!" But hey, ALL my critters get the very best care

Speaking of 'genetically wired'...
You could say that your inability to feed the mouse to your snake was your being hard-wired into finding big eyes, fuzzy hair and warmth too irresistable and a subject worthy of protection (I'm thinking baby seals here).
I'll state my opinion (we all have one!) without getting too deep into it. Every thing has a right to exist, and it's not up to me to instill my beliefs on another, but to respect that as a fellow living being. As such, that cute little mouse has as much right to life as the crickets...as do snakes, chameleons, and all other predators.

....when I was a kid my step-brother (we met when we were both around 8 y.o.) who had lots of lizards, snakes etc. always said I was cool "for a girl" b/c I liked herps and would handle them (it was he who showed me my first true cham)! And yes, you may be surprised how many women like/own herps. When some friends found out I had a tarantula many of the GUYS were very squeemish and women thoguth it is totally cool
