how old is my snake?

seanomac Nov 17, 2003 09:31 PM

heh...i just relized how BIG Zorro is, i have really bad like...estimation...so i decided to measure his skin(shedded, ofcourse) from tail to head, just to get an idea. He's over 16 inches, under 20...

Now, im guessing thats IS pretty big, would he still be considered a baby? the petstore i bought him from didn't give me a birthdate, and i don't know if the skin is larger/smaller than the actual snake

could anyone give me a rough estimate?

also..if he ISNT a baby anymore, is it too late to "break him into" me handling him regularly? or is there still a chance for him to become used to it?

Out from the night...when the full moon is bright
Comes a KINGSNAKE known as Zorro!

He has pitch black scales, and makes a Z with his tail
A Z that stands for Zorro!

Zorro! The nigrita so cunning and free!
Zorro! Who makes the sign of the Z!

Hmm... well, shed skins tend to stretch a bit, but it still gives you a decent ballpark estimate of length. I'd say that at 16-20", he's probably between a few months to a year old.

If he is 12-14", I would say it is atleast a yearling.
Post a pic of you holding him for a better quess. But it is always hard to guess a snakes age after a few years.

A shed skin always stretches a bit. I've never had a nigrita, but I expect they are similar in size to California king snakes, which I have raised. A 16 inch Cal king would be approximately 6 months old and would be a baby. It's never too late to accustom a snake to regular handling. But a snake less than two years old is easier to accustom to handling than an adult (over two years old) .
