Bad Shed! Help!

abca13 Nov 17, 2003 10:49 PM

My baby ball is just a few months old (probably 2 mo. old) and is in the middle of a really piecey, dry shed and having lots of difficulty with his head. The humidity ranges from his 60-70, his temp. is between 80-90 and he will NOT let me soak him. I've been holding him with a warm, damp washcloth and getting off some of the bigger pieces but I don't know what else to do or if this is normal for a baby. He is eating well and is very alert and appears to be very healthy. I don't get it.

then put the shoe box back in the tank where it is warm.

I'd put him in a CLEAN bucket or other large container with luke-warm water. Allow him to soak for 30mins. It should come right off. Be creative and make your own lid.

This worked for both of my bp's first sheds.

It's not unusual for a young python to have a bad shed. What we're learning from the experience will help us take better care of our pythons in the future.
When the next shed comes along, try raising the humidity to 75-80%. This should result in a better shed.
You can do this:
1) by putting an extra bowl of water in the cage, or a larger bowl of water. This creates more surface area for water to evaporate into the air.
2) If you use an UTH, You can also put the bowl of water on the UTH which will cause the water to humidify the air in the tank.
3) misting the tank a couple times a day
4) creating a moist hide using moss.
Any of these method should help.
