Keeping Heat?

AzLunchbox Nov 18, 2003 01:20 AM

Hmmm i was wondering if any of you could help me out.
Just the other day i got a 60 gallon tank for my beardie.....
The only problem is it's being VERY difficult to heat.......at first it was only getting to around 85 er so....which is a problem obviously....so i added ANOTHER 100 watt basking lamp.....and it got to around 90....slightly over......
so i added yet a THIRD 100 watt basking lamp.....and now it gets just up to 100 ......so it's the bare minimum for a basking area.....i'd like to get it closer to around 105 though...and preferably....with not as many damn lamps everywhere, heh.

Also there is a heat pad on that end of the tank.....i'm just not sur what else i can do.....i'm guessing buying bulbs that are over 100 watts.....but i can't do that till i get paid in another week.......and also i've read people say on this board that it should only take about one 100 watt to heat most tanks.....so is there any way i could be losing heat or something?.....or anything i can do to help the cge get hotter?

I'm living in AZ....so it's not like it's being affected from it being "too cold" outside....since it stays around 75-80 in the house at night....so any advice people?
thanks....

Have you tried raising the basking site up or lowering the bulb? Also, what are you using to test the temps?

I'm using a stick-on round dial thermometer from Flukers....it's stuck about....4 in. from the surface.....he has sticks to climb on to get closer to the lights if he needs to.....and i don't really want to raise the surface on the bottom much because then the heat pad would become useless if it's burried to far down......and the lights are resting on the screen top....so i don't really know how i'd make them any closer.

There's your problem right there. Those round stick on thermometers are about as accurate as using your finger to measure temperature. Purchase a digital thermometer with probe. Place the probe directly on the basking spot and measure the temp there. You also don't need the under tank heater as dragons don't detect heat from their bellies. They will climb to the light source. UTH are only good for reptiles that sense heat through their bellies. Snakes fall into this catagory.

get a digital thermometer from Walmart. If you still have a problem, I'd get a spot bulb from Lowe's/Home Depot.
