African Clawed Frog Injuries

frogbutt Nov 18, 2003 03:22 AM

I have 2 African clawed frogs. I've had them for about 7 years now, and I house them in a 55 gallon tank.

Went to feed them tonight, and noticed that the webs on their feet had been torn/bitten up.

I've kept them in a tank with my fish for over a year now and I've never had this problem before.

I'll be taking the suspect fish back to the shop.

My question: Will the webs on my frogs' feet grow back? I'd be really upset if they got some sort of infection or died due to this. Please help.

Hi,

What type of fish were you keeping with the frogs? Yes, the webbing will grow back, but you have to be careful that no bateria or fungus gets into the wounds, do this by adding a few teaspoons of aquarium salt and some general fish tonic or methylene blue to the aquarium according to the stated dose.

Are you able to get any pictures?

Chris.

I wish I could post pictures, but I don't have a digital camera. I have a Jelly Bean Parrot, two Leporinus fish, and an Angel.

I'm fairly sure the Angel isn't doing it, she's pretty docile.

As for the other three, they're going to the petstore.

I just took 3 back last week, Tin Foil Barbs. They may have been the ones that did it. They were getting to be really aggressive. I'm not sure, but I'm not taking the chance.

Where do you purchase the Meth Blue and "Fish Tonic" at? What are some brands I can look out for? Thanks a bunch.

In my experiance with ACF, I have found that the best cure for what ails them is 2 tsps table salt / gallon of water. For salt use in fresh water, I have seen numbers ranging from 1 tsp / 10 gallons to 2.75 tsp / gallon, but 2 tsp / gallon works excellently. I always used 2 tsp / gallon unless my frogs acted as if they were sick, then raise it to 2.75. Same goes for all "fresh water" aquariums, the fish need electrolytes that aren't found in tap water or even spring water. Use whatever kind of salt (Aquarium, Iodized, table, rock, etc) you choose, I used Morton's table salt and bred my frogs on several occations.

I would stay away from Meth Blue. Always use the biological method first and then the chemical method as a last resort.

By the way, your website is excellent. Very conclusive. The picture you have of the frog with the bitten toes under your Frog Injuries link best describes what my frogs look like.

Thanks again for replying.

Hi,

I'm glad you like my site and find it useful. If your frogs toes look like the broken toe picture on my site then I suggest you look for the products I suggested you can look out for these product brands:

Aquarium Pharmaceuticals (Doc Wellfish) Melafix
Interpet Methylene Blue.
Tetra Medica General Tonic.

Hope your frog heals well,

Chris.
