Just thought I'd let everyone know that they're having venomous snakes on the news at 6pm EST. Guess they are going to try to give 'em a bad reputation. I don't know what to expect, but I'll be watching! The ad I saw mentioned them being lethal weapons, and asking why aren't these snakes regulated.
Why don't they just leave our snakes alone, and do a story on the d@mned dogs that bite?

I doubt you'll find the media any friendlier to venomous snakes in Australia. I'd imagine the weather is nicer, though.

Hi all,

Its been awhile since I have surfaced about here. Responding to the whole thread not just the individual post.

The media is just as blind to merits of venomous snakes except that they are newsworthy when they bite someone to further enstill fear and horror into an a range of what seems to be a blood hungrey viewers.

As for regulations...

In Victoria (my state) we have what is generally regarded as the best laws (most liberal) for the keeping of Herps. Mind you that said ...

We have a list of about 150 species of Reptiles and 15 frogs. Of those its roughly half of the reptiles can actually be kept as only about half can be obtained legally.

For example....we have in Vic only one of the Oedura geckos. I have seen Oeduras quite commonly on your lists. Same with the monitors...V. acanthurus, V. gilleni, V. storri, V. gouldii, V. varius, V. tristis, V. mertensi and V. spenceri are basically the only species being kept in Vic. V. prasinus, V. glebopalma, V. glaureti etc etc in the states.

Kiss goodbye to all your non native species your Cobras, rhinos, gabbys, Atheris, Trims, Coppers, cottons, Rattlers, Mambas, as well as your Gators, Boas, Iguanas etc....as well as most of your designers stuff...we have Amelanistic Death Adders, Scaleless Death Adders (I don't think they are for sale), and an albino Carpet and Olive python.

No expos anymore...instead you have licence fees.

We have inspections, Returns, paperwork, fees and many laws to deal with.....you don't it would seem at times to have any dependant on where you live.

I love living here, I reckon no place is better but as for our laws regarding wildlife.....you tend to treated as a criminal rather than an keeper.

Can go into further,

Regards,

I think Australia has more venomous snakes than we do. The people there kill first, then ask questions later. Actually, I don't think they even bother asking any questions at all- just kill the snake.

but one thing's for sure, they definitely have much more open space. Given the size of Australia and the size of the U.S., both pretty close in size (give or take half a million square miles), the U.S.'s population is roughly 14 times that of Australia (280:20 million). So it would seem they have at least many areas where the snakes happily roam without fear of another Home Depot being built. Personally, I would just move to a hot friendly state. Nothing against Australia, but I'd take the red, white, and, blue over the greener grass anyday. If the grass is even any greener, there isn't any place that is without restrictions.

VERY WELL SAID TJ!

The US may have more venomous snakes... but I'd rather be bitten by any US snake than by any sort of taipan or brownsnake!
Personally I'll keep my nice cold climate and lack of angry stinging ants....

and grew up during this Generation, you'd be horrified, I'm not even going to argue, all I'm going to say is that 90% of this country is mentally dead, and I don't believe in anything much here anymore, so it's time for me moving onto better things ,

I disagree with you. The people of this country is not mentally dead. It's just the @ssholes in charge that screw things up. H If you really dislike the USA that much--love it or leave it.

Australia is the only continent (or country) in the world that has more species of venomous snakes than it does non-venomous. As far as the best place to live, I cannot answer that one, as I have not visited all of the places that I would consider living in. I have, however, done some time on the West German/Czech border, I can tell you this: Twelve foot high electrified fences are not erected to keep one's neighbors out. With all our flaws, I find it hard to believe there is a Nation better, all things considered, than this one.
