I Have a female and male ball python living in the same 40 gallon tank. I feed them one pre killed adult mouse per week in seperate enclosures. I recently started using newspaper as substrate. I use to use the astroturf type stuff you can get at pet stores but it is a pain in the ass to clean.

They are doing fine but I just wanted some opinions on this setup.

Newspaper has always worked well as a substrate for us.

You didn't mention their ages or size, but one adult mouse per week is pretty meager rations for anything beyond a young juvenile. You might consider switching to rat pups and upping the feeding to twice a week if they are young and you'd like them to grow. If they are older switch to a suitable size rat.

I watched a fairly good sized adult mouse casually cruise through a 1/2" square hole. If you use the "as big as their widest part" rule when selecting prey remember that a mouse's head is most likely it's widest part.

Oh hehe sorry about that. The male is about 4 months old and the female is 3 months old.

I think that combination works fine. I have 2, 22" Balls living in a 30gl long. I have tried to make it look as "natural" as possible. There are 4 hides, 2 water holes, a waterfall, an undertank heater, a ceramic heater for night and a light heat source for the day. They each eat 1 mouse every monday. They are 4 mnths old.

Here's a pic, not a good one, but you get the idea.

Ideally, the pythons wouldn't be housed together during unless breeding, but if they're young, i don't have much of a problem with it. newspaper is a great substrate.
