Jeff.....BRB questions

Suntzu18 Nov 18, 2003 03:36 PM

Thanks for taking the time to read this. My girfriend and I are going to go to the reptile show this weekend in Atlanta, GA. I am thinking about getting a brb baby. I have had several snakes before, never a BRB. Most that I have had have been very tame, (red tail boas and such), but I am not sure how tame the BRB will be. I want my GF to be able to handle it without always worrying about getting nipped. I really dont care as much, but she does a little. Will the BRB get used to us handling it often? I really love this snake and have wanted one for a while. Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Suntzu,
. Most snakes can be tamed with regular handling. If your snkes do not become tame with regular handling it is probably because of the way you are handling them. If you handle them like you are afraid of being bitten and when they do strike you jerk away from them or leave them alone they "learn" that striking gets them the results they want. If you handle them with zero fear they will become tame. When taming them you should just allow them to strike you and not flinch. By doing this they quickly "learn" that striking and biting does not cause you to leave them alone and that striking and biting do not get the results they want. If you tame your snakes while they are small it is relatively painless and you do not lose much blood. If they do not get tamed when little it will be painful and bloody trying to tame them later. You probably know that BRBs require much lower temperatures and much much higher humidity than most other boids. If you keep them like you would a Boa Constrictor or Ball Python they will go off feed and perhaps dehydrate and die. These are great pets for people who pay attention to details and really lousy pets for people who are unable or unwilling to pay attention to the small details.
