Croc skink in the middle of dinner!

iwana May 31, 2003 07:52 PM

Hi everyone,

I just happen to catch our female crocodile skin, Sigyn, in her food dish. Usually, she will do her immobility act when she realizes she's been noticed, and eventually run back to her hide. But to our amazement, she stayed there and eventually resumed eating!

What's more, when my husband grabbed the digital camera and I said "no WAY you're going to get close enough to get a picture," he settles down in front of the terrarium and manages to get quite a few shots... and she never stopped eating! I'm amazed, this is definitely a first for her, and from what I've read, it is VERY rare to see tribs feeding!

So, without further ado, here are pics of Sigyn in her food dish, hunting down mealworms:

I have the same impression about tribs! They get used to us very quickly!Mine doesnt hide as much as she used to hide! She sleeps during the night and is active during the day but the afternoon when she has her "siesta", lol!
Dont you think they make great pets?

I don't know about making great "pets," (I mean, they're not the type of lizard you can take out and interact with, not to the extent you can with, say, iguanas) but they are truly fascinating and absolutely adorable creatures!

I totally agree with one of your previous posts, I like them much better than leopard geckos, which have become so common in the herp world. Tribs are so different from other lizards; not only do they *look* like crocodiles, but everything about their behavior is similar to crocodiles (brooding and parental behavior, vocalization, etc.). They have quickly become our favorite when it comes to small lizards!

I just wish they would come out more... LOL

Maybe the CBs will be a little more handleable?

Flavia Guimaraes Jun 01, 2003 09:12 PM

If you can see them eating its because they are geting tame!

I dont know what you mean by being invisible! My trib almost doesnt hide anymore!Only for the afternoon siesta!I can see her swimming, surfing and climbing all day long and, at night, i cover her cage and she sleeps. Two days ago i saw her sleeping on her surfing board!lol!

In MHO if you put their cage on a high place, higher than you, like the top of a closet or a 6 F height shelf, they will not have afraid to show themselves.Just like iguanas they feel secure when they are higher than the predators, us!(lol!).
But this is only a guess based on the fact that my girl doesnt hide anymore during the day and her cage is on the top of a closet i have in my living room!

I have no idea how many mealworms or beetles my girl eats every day!Im raising them inside her cage, like that i dont have to worry if i need to go out of town for the week end.I need only to change her water.

The CB tribs are Brave, by this I mean they are not a nervous or as fast as the LTC's, my newly born T. Gracilis baby (BORN LAST WEEK) is very very vocal but if she is anything like her older CB brother she will be cool in no time!

wow!! cool skink, awesome cage!!!

what are using for heat?

VERY COOL!!!!

iwana Jun 16, 2003 03:38 PM

All I'm using for heat is a basking lamp during the day (25W) and that brings the ambient temps to about 78F with a basking temp of 82-84F. At night, there are no heat sources.

Do you keep tribbies, too?
